About the PreSales Job

What is “PreSales”? What job titles are included within the “PreSales” profession?

PreSales is a sales function that typically exists in B2B technology sales. PreSales Consultants work alongside Sales Representatives (a.k.a. Account Executives) and are responsible for the “technical solution track” of the sales process, whereas the Sales Rep is responsible for the “business” or “commercial” track of the sales process. Activities performed by PreSales Consultant include product demonstrations (“demos”), technical configuration (not coding), and collaboration with internal product and engineering teams.

Job titles that typically fall within the PreSales umbrella include: Sales Engineer, Solutions Engineer, Sales Consultant, Solutions Consultant, Solution Architect, Value Engineer, Product Consultant, and many others.

To keep things simple, at PSA we’ll use “PreSales Consultant” as a generic term for someone in any of the aforementioned roles.

Why should I consider a career in PreSales?

Most of the people we know in PreSales say it’s one of the best roles in business. A few of the reasons include:

  • Being part of the Sales effort is exciting, competitive, and provides a lot of variety from day to day. You’re also at the “tip of the spear” of product innovation because you’re closest to the customer in identifying and understanding their needs.
  • It’s High Reward and Low Risk: because you’re part of the Sales team you get the benefit of high rewards (compensation, bonuses, etc.), but you have less risk because you aren’t held to a strict quota in the same way your Sales Rep / AE is.
  • No cold calling or negotiating – you get to experience the fun parts of sales without having to deal with the parts that few enjoy.
  • Impact: You have the opportunity to work on deals and projects that can have a big impact on your customers or your company.
  • Hands-on Technology: You’re at the forefront of technological innovation and get to be hands-on with the latest technology. And in most cases, PreSales doesn’t require coding/programming skills.

How is PreSales different from Sales or Sales Development?

It’s worth reiterating that while PreSales is a sales role/function, you do NOT have to cold call or negotiate. The Sales Reps you partner with take care of that. You get to experience the fun parts of sales without having to deal with the parts that few enjoy.

What activities does a PreSales professional do every day? Will I have to negotiate or cold-call? What about coding?

PreSales Consultants don’t cold call or negotiate deals, and in the majority of roles coding is not required.

Typically, PreSales Consultants do the following activities on a regular basis:
  • Technical Discovery/Scoping - understanding customer challenges and requirements
  • Product Demos - demonstration of the product or solution you are selling
  • Technical Validation - guide your customer through a pilot or proof-of-concept of your product
  • Product Feedback - collaborate with internal Product and Engineering teams to influence product innovation

How often will I need to travel in a PreSales role?

The amount of travel required depends on many factors including the company you work for and the types of customers you are selling to. These days the vast majority of customer interactions happen virtually but as you become more experienced in the PreSales profession you may travel to visit customers from time to time.

About the PSA Program

What is PreSales Academy (PSA)?

PreSales Academy (PSA) is an online training program that provides you with hands-on training to get a job in tech sales– specifically in PreSales (aka Sales Engineering). PSA students are coached by experienced PreSales leaders and learn tech sales to a modern, advanced level. All graduates join a community of mentors, peers, and classmates. If you apply and are accepted, you will be required to attend live, online classes, complete various assignments, and participate in group activities. At the end of the program, if you are ready for full-time work and have met all the requirements, we will introduce you to hiring companies.

Why shouldn't I just apply to companies directly?

There are several advantages to letting us help you gain entry into a career in PreSales:

  1. We connect you directly with decision makers. If you’ve ever applied for a role through a career page on a company website, it can seem like your resume has been sent into an abyss. We put you directly in front of hiring managers.
  2. We connect you to companies that fit your skills. Companies differ in what skills they look for in PreSales. We’ve mapped their hiring criteria, and will identify where you’re a good fit.
  3. We can vouch for your skills, beyond your resume. The companies we work with trust our ability to find high-quality talent that others can’t, even if your resume doesn’t contain a great deal of related work experience.
  4. We save you time. Your initial time investment translates into expert skills and experience that would otherwise take years to develop.
  5. We support you after you're hired. When you join PreSales Academy, you join a community of mentors and classmates. Never take on a work challenge alone, ever again.
  6. We train you for $0 upfront and help you stand out. It’s hard to get noticed in tech. Our application process is competitive and our training program is intensive. You will learn from experts who have years of experience in PreSales.

Is your program part-time or full-time? What is the commitment?

The program is part-time: 10 weeks, with 2 live meetings per week occurring between 4:00-5:30pm (Pacific Standard Time). You must be available for 90% of the meetings. Attendance is taken, and you will not qualify for job introductions if you do not complete the mandatory requirements of the course. This requires attending online lectures, participating in weekly office hours with your team, submitting weekly progress reports, and working with companies on real practice scenarios. We outline these requirements in our Enrollment Agreement provided once you are accepted into PreSales Academy.

What things are you looking for in participants?

We work with a diverse group of applicants. We do not emphasize where you went to school – or if you went at all. In fact, where you went to college is usually not a great predictor of how well you do in sales. We care more about your attitude, determination, compassion, patience, curiosity, honesty, accountability, and positivity. We value doers, owners, hard workers, connectors, and thinkers. Clear, concise communication, and a commitment to helping others will go a long way.

Is your program only for PreSales positions? If so, why?

Yes. We are focused on creating full-time jobs for as many people seeking employment in the PreSales profession as possible.

I don't have sales or tech experience on my resume. Is PreSales Academy right for me?

We are looking for signs of sales talent, not just experience. A college job as a waiter can be just as meaningful as a manager role. The skills required for excelling in PreSales can be developed at any career stage

I don't really need training, and/or I don't have time. Does it still make sense to apply?

The training program allows us to vouch for your skills with top companies. You must complete the training program for us to be able to introduce you to hiring managers.

Application Process

What does the application process look like?

Applying to PreSales Academy is an easy 4-step process:

  1. Submit your online application
  2. Respond to any follow-up questions or requests (e.g. short video submission)
  3. Receive a decision in a few business days
  4. Complete and sign the Student Enrollment Agreement
It takes 10-50 minutes to complete the online application.

Is any information from my application, interview, or training shared with companies without my knowledge?

No. We will not share any information about you with companies until you’re ready. We will also ask you for companies to block in case your current or past employers are on our platform.

Why didn't you accept my application?

We are only able to accept a very limited number of students for each cohort to ensure we’re able to give every student adequate support throughout the program. Don’t take it personally if you’re not accepted! We encourage you to apply for future cohorts.

Can I apply more than once?

Yes. If you've applied before and not been accepted, we strongly encourage you to apply again for a future cohort. Demonstrating progress since your last application shows determination and growth – and that’s important to us.

Can I participate in PreSales Academy remotely?

Yes. Our training program is 100% online. You do need to commit to participating in all lectures through our virtual classroom, weekly video office hours with your teammates, and you need to be responsive and communicative in practicing real sales with companies.

Do I need a work visa?

Currently, our program is only open to those already eligible for full-time work in the U.S. You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. We will be looking to expand access to other countries for future cohorts.

What happens if I am not accepted into PreSales Academy? Does it mean I can't apply to companies on my own?

No. Our application process is confidential. We will NOT tell any companies that you were not accepted in our program, and it will NOT affect your ability to apply to or get a job at any company. Our process is imperfect, and we encourage you to re-apply.

Am I free to join any company after participating in the training program? What are my obligations?

You may join any company you wish after our training program, but our hiring partners are the ones that we have engaged with to accelerate your application process, and move you directly to the interview stage. The tuition repayment terms apply to both partner and non-partner companies.

Tution & Payment

How much does PreSales Academy cost?

You no longer need to choose between tuition and living expenses. At PreSales Academy we are committed to breaking the barriers that in the past made starting a new career seem almost impossible. As your career partners, we offer you the option to waive the program tuition until you get a high-paying job in tech. You have two tuition options. You may either pay upfront tuition, or deferred tuition in installments after graduating the program (Deferred Tuition Agreement). These amounts may differ due to state regulations (see below).

  • Upfront tuition option: $6,000 this amount is due either entirely upfront upon enrolling in the program, or in two installments in the first and sixth week of the course. This option is non-refundable.
  • Deferred Tuition Agreement option: $10,000, due in 12 monthly installments of $833.33 (alternate payment plans may be available). You only make payments if you are earning $70,000/yr or more — your income is regularly verified. Note, most of our graduates receive starting compensation of $100,000/yr or more. With the Deferred Tuition Agreement option a commitment fee of $200 is due prior to beginning the program.
